Radial spherical plain bearings are specialized sliding bearings. Designed to handle heavy radial loads, they also accommodate angular misalignment. Additionally, they work well with oscillating, tilting, or slewing motions at low to moderate speeds.

How They Work

Unlike rolling-element bearings, these bearings have no balls or rollers. Instead, they use an inner ring with a convex spherical outer surface. On the other side, there is an outer ring with a matching concave spherical inner surface. This clever design enables smooth sliding contact and reliable self-alignment. In fact, the spherical geometry compensates for shaft-to-housing misalignment, typically ±3° to ±15°. Misalignment can come from manufacturing tolerances, installation errors, or structural deflection under load.

Construction & Types

For maximum strength, these bearings are made from high-strength hardened bearing steel. They come in two main categories: maintenance-required and maintenance-free.
First, maintenance-required steel-on-steel models use phosphate coatings. They also use molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) treatments to reduce friction and wear. As a result, they require periodic grease relubrication. This simple step helps ensure long life under heavy shock and alternating loads.
On the other hand, maintenance-free versions integrate self-lubricating liners. Examples include PTFE fabric, PTFE composites, or bronze alloys. Thanks to these liners, regular lubrication is no longer needed. They are ideal for hard-to-reach or sealed applications. For even better protection, sealed variants with rubber or metal shields block dust, moisture, and contaminants. This extra layer extends service life in harsh environments.

Key Advantages & Applications

When it comes to benefits, radial spherical plain bearings have a lot to offer. They provide exceptional radial load capacity, a compact design, high rigidity, and great tolerance for misalignment. Because of these traits, they are irreplaceable in heavy machinery and industrial linkages.
Key applications include:
  • Construction equipment: excavator booms, bulldozer arms, and hydraulic cylinders
  • Agricultural machinery
  • Mining trucks
  • Automotive suspensions
  • Industrial robotics
  • Aerospace linkages
  • Renewable energy systems
Most importantly, they perform best in slow, repetitive oscillating movements. They are not ideal for high-speed continuous rotation, where rolling bearings are more suitable.

Sizes & Customization

To fit different needs, these bearings are available in metric and inch sizes. Bore diameters range from ~10 mm to over 600 mm. They can also be customized with special materials, clearances, and surface finishes. This flexibility helps meet extreme temperature, corrosion, or heavy load demands. All in all, their robust, simple design ensures reliability and cost-effectiveness in tough conditions. For this reason, they remain critical components in articulated joints and heavy-duty mechanical systems worldwide.
